World Bank

The World Bank was established by the World Bank group on 27th December 1945. The concept of establishing the World Bank was originally thought on 27th December 1945 following the Bretton Woods agreement. Just after two years the World Bank issued its first and the largest loan of $250 million to France as post-war reconstruction.

The World Bank comprises 185 member countries all these countries are the direct shareholders and are represented by the board of governors. The members meeting takes place once a year. Five countries are the largest share holders of the bank including France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The president of the World Bank remains in office for a term of five years.

Traditionally the president is always the U.S citizen and his nominees are confirmed by the board of governors. The current president Robert Zoellick chairs the meeting of the board of directors. Actually the executive directors are the board of directors and meet twice in a week for scrutinizing the activities like approval of loans and guarantees, new policies, the administrative budget, country assistance strategies and borrowing and financing decisions.

The vice presidents of the bank serve as the principal manager of the World Bank they are the in charge of regions, sectors networks and different other functions of the bank. There are 24 Vice-Presidents, 3 Senior Vice Presidents and 2 Executive Vice Presidents in the World Bank.

The word bank as a part of its activities focus mainly on the reduction of global property. It also focuses on setting up of goals for development of different countries. The bank provides aid to developing countries to eradicate poverty by developing a healthy environment suitable for investment, jobs and over all growth.
