The property is owned by the National Park Service. The white house construction began with the laying of the cornerstone on 13th October 1792. The foundation of it was also laid by the slave labor. Some of the work of the house was also performed by the immigrants. The initial construction of the white house for a period of eight years the total cost of which was about $232,371.83.
Though the construction of it is not yet complete it became ready to be accommodating on 1 November 1800. After the construction was over the walls made of sandstone were coated with a mixture of rice, glue, lime and lead which gave the house its actual color and name.
Originally the building was called as the “President’s Palace” and many other names. It got its familiar name in the year 1812. The modern white house building is divided into west wing and east wing. The entire complex is divided like the small group of buildings that houses the presidency is called as the White House Complex. The complex includes the Executive Residence that is flanked by the East wing and the west wing.
The actual size of the white house can not be easily determines as much of its part is either concealed underground or by landscaping.
