The Smithsonian Institute was founded by a British scientist James Smithson. The institute was founded for the increase and diffusion of knowledge. The institute was established as a trust by the American congress. It serves as a federal government body. Above half of the Smithsonian's workforces of some 6,300 persons are the federal government employees.
The institute is represented by the attorneys of the United States Justice department. The Chancellor of the institute works as a nominal head. The entire works of the institute are conducted by 17 members board of regents. In the regents eight members are the United States officials
The Vice President and the Chief Justice of the United States, three United States Senators appointed by the Vice President, and three Members of the House of representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House. Many secretaries were appointed for the institute but it was Cristian Samper the first Latin American to hold the position as a secretary of the Smithsonian Institute.
