The Philips Collection

The Philips Collection is an art museum founded by Duncan Phillips in the year 1921. It was originally called as the Phillips Memorial Gallery. The art gallery is located in the Dupont circle near Washington D.C. the art gallery represents the collection of art by great artists like El Greco, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Georges Braque, James McNeill Whistler, Gustave Courbet, Paul Klee, Winslow Homer, and Mark Rothko.

The art museum was opened in the year 1921 and was America’s first modern art museum. The museum featured collection of about 2,500 art works by American and European impressionists and modern artists. The art museum is internationally famous for extensive art collection.

The museum that was founded by Duncan Philips played a major role in introducing the American art globally. The museum begins its journey with a small collection of paintings but gradually the collection started expanding. Slowly the collection expanded to about 600 beautiful paintings. The paintings focus on the continuous tradition of art. The museum has art works by some of great artists such as El Greco.

The museum is important for its wide collection of impressionist and modern paintings with European masters work like Pierre Bonnard, Gustave Courbet, Paul Cézanne, Georges Braque, Jacques Villon, Honoré Daumier, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso , Paul Klee, Manuel Robbe, Henri Matisse, and Vincent van Gogh. The Philips Collection is also recognized as art works by group of artists especially favored by Phillips. Other than these aspects the museum also became famous as The Phillips Collection Center for the Study of Modern Art, a new museum-based educational model.

Jay Gates is the present director of the art museum he took charge of office in 1998 and under his direction the Philips Collection has continuously grew. To accommodate its rapidly developing art collection, audiences, and activities, the Phillips accomplished a new building project in April 2006.
