The National Zoo is located in Washington D.C. the zoo is popularly recognized by the association of Zoos and Aquariums. The National Zoo was founded in the year 1889.
The zoo offers free entrance and remains open to the public most of the time. Large part of it is dedicated to education. Altogether, the zoo at present contains about 2,000 animals of 400 different species. The National Zoo also receives fund as donations for its maintenance.

The national zoo was founded by naturalist and American conservation leader William T. Hornday it was his concern for saving the lives of endangered species that resulted in the establishment of the zoo. It was his effort to keep the endangered species and educate the common people about wild life.

The national zoo which was a small set up slowly grew from contributions of animals from circuses but the most important development of it took place when William Mann, became third director of the zoo. Mann organized collecting expeditions from all over the world bringing a variety of species to the zoo, some common animals like giraffes and leopards, others great rarities, like a young gorilla were commonly found.

In the modern days the national zoo is recognized as one important zoological research institute in United States. The National Zoo is famous for conducting research in different fields all over the world, by providing expertise and logistical support to local research and conservation efforts in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America.

The zoo is free and remains open to every one. According to the Washington post in 2005, about 2 million visitors visit the zoo every year. The national zoo has good security system and maintains its own security police.
