Jefferson Memorial

Tourists from all over the world love to enjoy the stunning images provided by the Jefferson Memorial. It is located in towards the southern part of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park. This popular tourist site is regarded as one of the most beautiful venues of Washington. It was built in the memory of Thomas Jefferson. The monument is made up of marble, which tremendously enhance its elegance. At the center point of the monument, there is a portrait statue made of bronze. This particular statue stands itself on a six foot base. There are writings of Jefferson carved on the statue that reflects the history of the city.

The Jefferson Memorial lie on the banks of the Potomac river. The site where it is located, is full of Japanese Cherry trees that enhances the beauty of the entire site. A large number of events and ceremonies are held every year. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the popular festivals of Jefferson Memorial.

History of Jefferson Memorial

Around the year 1930, Washington had produced a good number of monuments under the presidentship of persons like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. It was Franklin Roosevelt who proposed the idea of making a monument in the memory of Thomas Jefferson. In the year 1934, a resolution was passed for making a monument in the memory of Jefferson. John Russel Pope was the original designer of Jefferson Memorial as well as the National Gallery of Art. The designs of the monument reflect a rich Roman architecture. The Jefferson Memorial also had some resemblance with the Pantheon of Rome.

The construction of Jefferson Memorial started in the year 1939 and ended in 1943. The interior decoration of the monument is truly outstanding. The interior walls consist of inscriptions that were engraved from the time of Independence.
