Tours and Outdoor activities in District of Columbia

The city of Washington DC is not just a city, it is much more than that, yet, it is not a state. The city is actually a district that was created by the Congress of the United States in 1790 as a place to meet and transact government affairs. Originally it was a ten-mile square of land across the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland. The official name was the District of Columbia and the new city constructed within was to be called Washington in honor of the founding father of USA and also its first president.
The complete name of the city turned out as Washington, District of Columbia. Most people prefer to call it Washington D.C or D.C. It is one of the few cities in the USA that are planned. A French engineer, Pierre L'Enfant was selected from Lafayette's army named to design a glorious capital city similar to Paris in 1790. There are a lot of things to see in the District of Columbia. Tours are held of the US Capitol Building, the White House, the Supreme Court and many federal government agencies like the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (where they print the money) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) (where they shoot a machine gun). Other places like the Washington Memorial, the Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials. You can see Arlington National Cemetery, the Vietnam memorial, the Korean War memorial and the Battle of Iwo Jima memorial are also quite attractive to tourists. Several days can be spent in touring the parts of the Smithsonian Institute which is one of the largest and finest collection of museums in the world.

There are plenty of historical and educational attractions in the District of Columbia. A variety of cultural and entertainment activities, plenty of multi-ethnic dining experiences and an array of shopping opportunities make a visit to this place truly memorable. The port city of Baltimore and Annapolis, home of the US Naval Academy, are within an hour drive.
