Music of District of Columbia

The District of Columbia has seen the rise of many renowned and well known musicians. The place is particularly famous for many varied musical genres. One of the major musical figures who had risen to fame from the District of Columbia was John Phillip Sousa. He was a military brass band composer. Later, other musical legends like Duke Ellington and soul singers like Roberta Flack also became quite well known. The District of Columbia is home to the Washington Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera and the National Symphony Orchestra (founded in 1931 by Hans Kindler)
The city also has the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts which is a nationally important venue for a variety of musical performances. A Washington Music Hall of Fame is maintained by the Washingtonian magazine. The oldest musical group in the United States, the United States Marine Band, is based in the District of Columbia. It was formed in 1798, even before the city was founded.The most famous conductor of the Marine's Band is John Philip Sousa, who composed many of the most famous American marches, as well as several musical comedies.

  • Blues: evolved in the early 20th century, D.C.
  • Bluegrass: came to prominence in the 1950's.
  • Folk: evolved in 1961
  • Soul/Funk: took shape during the mid 60's.
  • Go go: developed during the mid 70s and began to take its current shape by the late 1970s.
  • Hardcore:
  • Emo: rose during the mid -1980s.
  • Punk: also evolved during the mid- 1980s.
  • Post-punk: became popular during the 1990s.
