Johns Hopkins University is named after Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins left $7 million for the foundation of the university. During that time, it was the largest bequest in the history of the U.S. The sum would be equivalent to a value of $131 million in the year 2006. the first president of the Johns Hopkins University was Daniel Coit Gilman.
Johns Hopkins was the first American university to teach subjects through means of seminars instead of lectures only. The university was used as a model for several other research universities, particularly the University of Chicago.
